Happy New Year To All!

Barb had posted this on her blog which I look at every day and I thought it was so pretty I swiped it to put on the Magnolia Blog. Even though there really isn't much we can post any more both Barb and I wish all our Magnolia friends (who really are more like family) a very Happy New Year along with our best wishes for good health and much happiness to come your way in the upcoming year.

Lloyd Sachs

Lloyd William Frank Sachs September 25, 1928 – November 7, 2022

Lloyd was born on September 25, 1928 in Inver Grove, MN to descendents of Dakota County pioneers Albert and Helen (Bester) Sachs who preceded him in death. He had one sister, Donna Mae who was called home in 1944. He was baptized on October 14, 1928 and confirmed on May 10, 1942 at Trinity Lone Oak Lutheran Church in Eagan, MN where he remained an active member and served as a Trustee for a majority of his lifetime.

Lloyd grew up and worked on the family farmstead, which still remains today, on South Robert Trail in Inver Grove Heights. He later worked in construction before meeting LaDonna (Erickson) during a circle two step at Schlief’s Little City on Highway 55 in Inver Grove Heights, MN which is now the location of a Target store. They were married on January 31, 1953 and shortly after the birth of their first daughter, Joyce, Lloyd was drafted into the Army serving in Germany as a Cook/Baker Specialist June 1954-June 1956. As untimely this experience was for a young husband, father, and only son, he was grateful for the opportunities that were afforded him by serving his country. It was during this time that he completed his High School education and received his diploma in April 1956. This set him up with the opportunity to continue his education and training through the VA programs when he was discharged and attended the Labor & Industry Apprenticeship course to receive his qualifications as a journeyman tool and die maker. He worked at several different shops over the years and developed numerous lifetime friendships. This was a career that provided well for him and his family throughout the years and into retirement.

He and LaDonna were blessed with a second daughter, Valerie, in 1958 and in 1960 broke ground for their new home to be located on a parcel of the original farmstead in Inver Grove Heights. Sadly, that house was recently taken down for the expansion of County Road 26. Son David was born in 1962. During those years of raising their family together, they enjoyed many camping trips and vacations, a Couples’ Card Club and hosting an annual Halloween costume party. Lloyd was also an avid bowler and loved fishing. Raising coonhounds and hunting also became a favorite pastime highlighted with his annual barbeque. Many good times and memories of fishing and tubing at Lee & Marilyn’s on Clearwater Lake in Annandale and a few cruises were captured before LaDonna’s death on September 24, 1986.

On January 6, 1990 Lloyd married Violet (Stensgard) at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Inver Grove Heights where he became an active member. Together in retirement they enjoyed many wonderful travels to Florida, Panama Canal, Hawaii, Colorado, New York and Niagara Falls and many other places before making the decision to head south to winter in Donna, Texas. They both worked and volunteered for DARTS, enjoyed Kampers Klub and Inver Grove Heights Seniors, where Lloyd served as President. He participated in a Senior Bowling League as well as pitched and won several awards while competing in a horseshoe league. He always enjoyed gardening, feeding the birds and watching the antics of all the squirrels right out his front door. Lloyd’s interest in woodworking really peaked in retirement and remained a passion and activity until his death. His years as a tool and die maker had honed his skills for accuracy and detail, as his expert craftmanship found in crosses, Celtic spoons, old shoes or boots, or a hummingbird has been appreciated by many over the years. He was very proud of his carving of Christ with outstretched arms that traveled to South America to serve as an altar centerpiece at a mission church there.

Following the death of Violet in October 2016, Lloyd started thinking about moving from his home of nearly 60 years. The wait lists were long but the process of downsizing also took time. Lloyd moved from his Inver Grove home to Croixdale retirement community in Bayport, MN in January 2019. He thrived in his new home as we converted his laundry room into his woodshop so he could continue to carve. He was active in recruiting two of his dear pastor friends to assist with Sunday afternoon services as he served as the head usher. It was even difficult for family to schedule times to visit with his busy schedule of Bingo, Hand & Foot, Pinochle, 500, Mexican Train, and Dominos! He will be dearly missed by his many friends there. In recent months, Lloyd found peace and comfort reinstating his membership and rejoined the church family at Trinity Lone Oak, and we are grateful for the love and support extended to him during his last months of life.

Lloyd is survived by his and LaDonna’s children Joyce , Valerie, and David along with their spouses, 7 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and Violet’s children Ray, Darla, Roxy, and Randy along with their spouses, 7 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, brother-in-law Gerald, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Also survived by cherished neighbors Chris and Linda, his woodcarving pals, and special friends and neighbors he shared his final 4 years of life with at Croixdale, and other loving relatives and friends.

This and That

It's been a while since I've put anything on the blog mostly because we've been busy and frankly, there just isn't that much Magnolia news. I did find out that Don Loring passed away on November 3. Don and Marilyn Loring were long-time Magnolia residents before moving over to Siesta Village where they could own their own land. Don was an excellent pool shooter and when we first started shooting pool at Magnolia he took me under his wing and helped me get started. Neither Jim or I had ever held a pool cue in our hands before that so his help was very much appreciated.

As I've said several times before, there are lots of former Magnolia people here in our park, Trails End which does make it very nice.

We've been busy working on the mobile home that we bought here last December. We weren't able to actually take possession until April so did nothing on it last season. Today we had the pleasure of trying to figure out how to lay Vinyl Plank flooring. It was a struggle this morning but we think we have it figured out so tomorrow should go much better. It's not quite as easy as I thought it would be but once we understood how the best way is to click the planks into place it went pretty well.

We got here November 14 which is a little earlier than usual for us but we knew we had lots we wanted to get done this winter. And speaking of winter, right now it is certainly more summer-like as it's quite warm and also quite humid. It finally stopped raining, the first week we were here I think it rained hard, every single day.

The "Texas Crud" as everyone calls it has been going around, some people get quite sick and others just more or less a nasty cold. Jim had it last week but it only lasted a couple of days. He thought it would be nice to share it with me so my throat has been scratchy but at least my nose isn't running - yet! His throat was scratchy about a day and a half and his nose ran steadily for one day and that was it, thank goodness. I heard from some friends back home and one of their employees has covid so they thought maybe they should get tested. No symptoms, fully vaccinated, but both tested positive. Thank goodness for vaccines as most likely they would be quite sick without them. Neither are really youngsters and the older we all get the weaker our immune systems get.

It's hard to believe that Christmas is almost upon us. I took a quick and short walk tonight after taking a bag of garbage to the dumpsters. The park is filled with lots of beautiful Christmas lights. We are behind this year in getting anything up. Our lawn needs to be mowed and I think maybe the guy who mows it will come Sunday and then we can put our stuff out.

We have driven past Magnolia a few times, it looks pretty sad to say the least and probably most of you know that the big Don Wes flea market building burned to the ground this summer. Some of the vendors are putting up little buildings and are open but I rather doubt that the big building will be replaced. It looks so different with it gone and lots of Winter Texans are missing it as it was a very popular place to gather on the days they were open and so handy to Magnolia. We walked up there many times each season.

As always, if you have news to share, please do let me know and I will be happy to post it.

This and That

A reminder came to me today that the scammers are out there. I had a Facebook message from a friend concerned about the Andrea Wilson or perhaps Andrea Wilson Woods message she had gotten and to let all her friends know as it was dangerous to sum it up in a nutshell. This hoax has been around for years and is nothing to get concerned about. If you should get that message don't forward it to all your Facebook friends or to anyone else, as a matter of fact. It is pure and simple a hoax. Delete the message and forget about it! As I've said many times before if people would only use their "smarts" to do something good instead of trying out their tricks on the unsuspecting public it would be ever so much better. I suspect the tricksters will keep trying unfortunately.

The weather here has turned cool and it rained most of the day today. The soybeans are starting to turn brown, a sure sign of fall. The leaves are trying to turn but nothing very pretty yet. We had a very dry summer so not sure what that might do to the fall color. My favorite season used to be winter, but back then I liked the snow and I liked to ice skate. Not now! I no longer get excited about snow and when November arrives I am ready to head south to warmer climates.

We are looking forward to traveling by car and a shorter duration trip than when we towed the 5th wheel. We had lots of fun over the years but we are at the point where it was time to get rid of the RV, which we did this summer. We have a fair amount of work we are going to be doing on the mobile we bought so that will keep us busy for a while. I am working on a king-sized quilt, probably the last super-sized quilt I will make. Wall hangings are much more fun, cheaper to make and MUCH quicker!

We will be mowing our lawn either tomorrow or most likely Monday and then hopefully only once or twice more depending on the weather. Last year our first frost was very late (I think) but the grass slowed down quite dramatically even without a frost. It knows that winter is coming!

We are looking forward to seeing lots of Magnolia people when we get back to Texas and this year Deral Rogers will be joining us as he has purchased a mobile in Trails End.

Our Baltimore Orioles have left but we still have at least one hummer left. The males have been gone but I still see one or two females come for a drink. They are already showing up in the Rio Grande Valley but that is not their final destination. Many will head down to the Central America area. It's a very long journey and no, they do not hitch a ride on geese as the old story went. That is untrue. They fly, all on their own.

Remember, if you have news you would like to share, do let me know and I will certainly put it on the blog.

Broken Leg

I heard from Connie Dziuk today and she told me that her mother, Virginia Stavrum, fell last week and broke her leg. This happened August 10, last Wednesday and on Thursday she had surgery to put a pin in. She will be needing rehab so let's send her our best wishes and prayers for a speedy recovery. A broken bone at any age can't be any fun and I know we all wish her the best. Virginia and Mel were longtime residents of Magnolia Park along with a lot of their family.

If anyone else has news, good or bad, that they would like to share, please let me know.

Enjoy the rest of the summer. It is speeding by faster and faster! I notice the difference in the early morning when already it is darker later. Pretty soon our thoughts will start to think about Texas even though we don't generally leave until November but it is fun to think about the upcoming season.

Dave & Mary Bruun Car Show Winners

I heard from Mary a day or two ago and she told me that she and Dave had been to the Abe Lincoln car show in Springfield  Illinois and they were double trophy winners. Early in the day they received the Kailey Wilmarth Award sponsored by her father. She lost her battle with leukemia while still in the 8th grade. At the end of the day they received 1st place in the 1926-1949 category with her dad's old 1939 Oldsmobile 2 door sedan named Maggie.

This and That

Not much news from anyone this summer. I did hear from Marty Harper today and she tells me Don is recovering so nicely from his back surgery earlier this summer. He still has to wear his brace and can't lift more than 25 pounds but to me it sounds like he is doing very well.

Jim had a very light breakthrough covid case a couple of weeks ago, wasn't ever really sick, did not have a fever but had a very raspy voice. His throat wasn't sore but it was hard to talk and his thinking was "wonky" or as Barb says, brain fog. Apparently that hangs around for a while but it is getting better. He did have extreme fatigue and still tires easily but otherwise is fine. We've been remodeling my bathroom and just like last summer when we did Jim's, things never go as planned. We built this house in 1973 and it has had several renovations over the years including the bathrooms. Mine and Jim's started out as one very large bathroom when we built it but after the kids left we divided it in half and now he has his and I have mine off our bedroom. But as is always the case, it's easier to build new than it is to remodel old so once again it's been a challenge but we will get it finished one of these days.

It has been very dry here in Central Wisconsin and we were supposed to get lots of rain today but somehow we only got a few very light showers, not nearly enough that's for sure. The farmer's market and roadside stands are stocked with lots of fresh vegetables and the corn and bean crops look great in spite of not having a whole lot of precipitation all summer.

If anyone has news that you would like to share, please do let me know and I will be happy to post it. Enjoy what's left of the summer - the days are getting shorter and before we know it, fall will be here.

Don Wes Burned Today

Flea Market Near Mexican Border Engulfed in Flames

A large fire broke out at the Don-Wes Flea Market in Donna, Texas, on July 16. Video filmed by Mike Garcia Jr. shows heavy gray smoke billowing from the site. The market contained over a dozen vendors and a restaurant, according to their website, and had been in the community for 22 years. Local news reports said multiple agencies responded to the fire on Saturday. No injuries were reported. Other video filmed Saturday showed debris from destroyed structures at the location. “Grateful to Weslaco FD for their response to control and put out the fire,” said Congressman Vicente Gonzalez in a post on Facebook. This and That

The 4th of July has come and gone and yes, the days are already starting their downward trend although as of yet it's not noticeable. It rained off and on here yesterday but cleared off in time for the fireworks last night. We could hear them but did not drive to town see them going off. We watched the Capital 4th on PBS but to be honest I found it somewhat disappointing. We've watched it every year for many years but this year it did not "trip my trigger". The woman who played the piano was very good and had the music memorized which is no easy feat but for some reason I found the whole show somewhat disappointing. Oh well, each to their own and as most of you know I am somewhat picky!

I don't have anything in the way of news so thought I would give you a couple of recent bird photos. Some of you will have seen them on Facebook but not everyone is on Facebook. The top one is a male Baltimore Oriole enjoying grape jelly and below that are two Red-headed Woodpeckers.

Happy 4th of July

Enjoy the holiday today and let's hope we all have some nice weather. Storms predicted here for later but right now the sun is just coming up and it looks nice out. As far as I know, no news from anyone so that is actually good news.

Good News

I heard from Marty Harper today and she told me that Don's back surgery yesterday went really well. They got him up today and he is walking which is very good news. He will be wearing a back brace for several months but compared to the pain he has been for such a long time I'm sure the back brace probably will feel pretty good. Don is someone who when anyone needs help with something he is right there to give them a hand. A pretty handy fellow to know!!

I have no other news to pass along. All you dads have a

Happy Father's Day

This and That

I thought I'd mention that Don Harper will be having back surgery tomorrow. Not only that but he has been fighting shingles, however, the surgery is a go. Hopefully that will fix the pain that he has been in since we were all together in south Texas for the winter. We would meet often on our morning walks but as we headed toward spring I saw him less and less and quite often he was using a cane or at least had it along with him. We all know that is not like Don so let's keep him in our thoughts and prayers and wish him a very speedy recovery and hope he will be out and about again, pain free.

Otherwise, there really isn't a lot to report. As those of you know who are Facebook friends we have sold our 5th Wheel which is a very big relief to us. It was a lot of fun for many years but when it ceased to be fun we decided it was time to purchase a mobile in our park and hang up our RVing keys. Oddly enough, Barb and Butch Brooker, as most of you probably already know, made the same decision and they bought a park model over at Trophy Gardens. We will miss it in many ways but in other ways it will be nice not to be hauling that very large rig down the highway. With the price of diesel now, it certainly was the right time to come to that decision.

Storms rumbled through Wisconsin today but we really had nothing but some rain. There certainly were tornado warnings out for areas not far from us but nothing happened here. The sun has come out now and it cooled off. Yesterday we had 99 degrees and very high humidity. It seems it goes from one extreme to another, either it's too cold or too hot, nothing in between. Next week temperatures in the 90s are in the forecast once again.

Our Amish neighbors have a farm market stand by the road, it's not open yet but their plants are spectacular and it won't be long before they will have something for sale. Our favorites are their tomatoes and then their sweet corn. It's so handy, I can walk maybe a block up the road or less and have all the fresh vegetables that we want. I think their first offering will be strawberries but because of the cold spring they are somewhat delayed.

If any of you ex-Magnolia people, or the few who still do reside in Magnolia have any news you would like to share please let me know and I will be glad to post it.

Happy News

I am so pleased that I can share this good news. I really meant to put it on last week but got caught up in our Texas project and it didn't get done.

Friday, May 6 is going to be a very special day for two very special people. Duane Ergen and Reggie Holland will be celebrating as that is the day they have chosen to be their wedding day. It couldn't happen to any two nicer people and I for one wish both of them much happiness on this day and in the years to come. I think it would be really nice if we all sent them cards with our congratulations and best wishes. I am going to give you the last address I have for them and if it isn't right, I will post a correction.

1155 Porter Street, Clearwater MN 55320 is the last address I have for them and it is the address I found on line so hopefully it is still correct. Shower them with your blessings and best wishes!!

This and That

Another dreary, damp day here in Central Wisconsin although this afternoon the sun did peak out for about two minutes before it once again retreated behind the thick cloud cover.

I have a couple of things to share and I have already put this on my Facebook Page but for those of you who are not on Facebook I am also putting it here. I read that there is a very simple way to add the degrees symbol when typing on your Android smart phone and that is simply holding down the zero, release and you will have the degrees symbol after the number. Try it, it does work and is kind of fun and it eliminates having to type out the word degrees every time you are saying what the temperature is.

Secondly, there has been a lot of discussion here and there about mail forwarding and how much trouble most people encounter. Here is what we do. About three days before we leave in November I go online to the USPS official site (not any other site) and sign up for the mail forwarding service. It is very simple and I give them the date in November that we are going to leave. At the same time, I put an ending date in and I make it about three weeks before we plan to get home. We are almost always home by the very end of March so I usually make it sometime around the end of the first week in the month. This costs a very minimal charge so they can check your ID and make sure it is you, and requires a credit card. At the same time, I go to the post office take one of those yellow cards that are always available on the counter and fill it out to have our mail held from the day the forwarding is stopped and I check the box that we will pick up the accumulated mail and then our normal mail service will resume. Years ago I was able to fill out a form I picked up at the post office, they discontinued that so then I found the form online, filled it out and took it into the post office. That too disappeared so now I do it on line and it has always worked flawlessly. They will hold your mail for 30 days. One year we got stuck in Amarillo for a week because of the weather so it was held longer than 30 days. I just gave them a call and told them the situation and it was not a problem. I read all kinds of complaints about the trouble people have but honestly, if you do it like this you will be surprised how simple it is and how well it works. I think the key is to put the ending date in when you start having it forwarded. Most people, I think, tend to return home about the same time each year. Years ago we went to auto-pay for our utility bills so we don't have to work about bills in the held mail. For everything else but the utility bills I can do it online at my convenience.

One other tidbit, we had a credit card hacked two years ago and I do believe it was Barb Brooker who told me that she uses one card for online and a different one in person. I could be wrong about who told me that but it does seem like it was Barb. Ever since then I have done that. The one I use online is the same one I use over the phone for reservations and things like that. At least if your card is hacked you will know it was either someplace where you inserted it or if it's the other one, it was hacked online or over the phone. Of course, you still don't know where but it does narrow it down.

We will be heading back down to the Valley on Monday when we will finally be able to take physical possession of the mobile home that we purchased in Trails End. It will be our first opportunity to really look it over since we purchased it in mid-December. We are hoping for better weather going down than we had coming home. This time we will be in our little fuel efficient car that for its size holds a whole lot of cargo.

I understand the birthday party for Carmen that Darlene organized at Trails End was great and I'm sorry we were already on our way home but I know some of you were able to attend and enjoyed yourselves meeting up with other Magnolia friends and wishing Carmen a Happy Birthday.

Think Spring!!!

" I told you I would be here at 5:40! You just weren't listening!"

This and That

Those of you long-time Magnolia Park residents of old, will remember how the parrots would come through usually morning and evening. They would quite often land in a tree on Pecos in the vicinity of where Liz and Andrea lived and maybe still do. We haven't driven through Magnolia for quite some time so even though I think they are still there I'm not quite sure.

In any case, tonight, here at Trails End about 5:40 we heard the most raucous noise, as only parrots can make and sure enough there was a huge flock just across the highway on the wires and in the trees by Dollar General. There was obviously something in the trees that they appeared to really be enjoying and they stayed for quite some time. I took 97 pictures!! Here are just a few for you to enjoy.

 24. The 1958 'Sir Vival.' Designed by Walter C. Jerome of Worcester, this unique two-section vehicle was made to protect its driver and three passengers from death or injury on the highway.

The designer believed that, in case of a collision, the engine compartment would take most of the brunt and leave the passengers safe. Its standout features included a two-piece engine and cab, along with a driver turret. Unfortunately, only one Sir Vival was ever made, and it remains in the care of Bellingham Auto Sales in Bellingham, Massachusetts, even today!
